Bramble Cocktail with Old Dominick Gin
This post is sponsored by Old Dominick Distillery. All opinions are my own. I’ve expanded my liquor horizons in the last year, and have been experimenting with gin more often. Gin can vary widely in flavor profiles, ranging from dry and citrusy to heavy floral notes. The newest gin in my collection comes from Old Dominick Distillery in Memphis, which I featured on the blog earlier this year.
Old Dominick launched their Formula No. 10 gin at their Memphis distillery this spring, and it’s finally made its way to Chattanooga! As much as I loved their Memphis Toddy and Huling Station Bourbon, I was excited to try their latest spirit. (Side note, you can check out my previous post with the Memphis Toddy and spiced Old Fashioned here.)
Old Dominick Distillery released their Formula No. 10 gin in March, and it’s been a great addition to their lineup, which already includes two whiskies and two vodkas. Why is it called Formula No. 10? Because it’s master distiller Alex Castle’s 10th formula in her development process. It’s 95 proof, distilled from 100% neutral grains, and is infused with eight botanicals: juniper, coriander, angelica root, licorice root, grapefruit peel, chamomile, orris root, and ginger root. The combination of those give this gin an earthy, sweet, refined taste that makes it super versatile for cocktails, or great for sipping over ice. Also, can we observe how beautiful that label artwork is?
Gin Bramble Cocktail
The Bramble is a relatively new cocktail to my repertoire. It was first introduced in London in the 1980s by famous bartender Dick Bradsell. The Bramble cocktail is traditionally made with gin, lemon juice, and creme de mure, a sweet-tart blackberry liqueur. Normally I’d try to find some, but since it’s berry season, I thought using real blackberries would bring a nice freshness to the cocktail. And to be honest, I’m running out of room on my liquor shelf and cabinet for new bottles. So here we are with fresh blackberries. I believe Bradsell made this cocktail as a nod to the fresh blackberries he got as a child, too. So it works out!
For my take on the Bramble cocktail, I started with 0.75 oz each of lemon juice and simple syrup, a handful of blackberries, and 2 oz of the gin. At first sip, it was still a bit tart for my taste, so I bumped it up to 1 oz simple syrup, and that was much better. If you prefer more tartness, keep it at 0.75 oz, or even reduce to 0.5 oz simple syrup.
The Formula No. 10 gin is a great spirit choice for this cocktail. The botanicals in the gin are balanced wonderfully by the sweet tart from the lemon and blackberry. As it dilutes, the flavors blend even more, making this a very drinkable and enjoyable cocktail for warm summer afternoons. Even gin haters will have trouble saying no!
