Hot Chocolate Mix (Homemade!)
Everyone loves hot chocolate this time of year. To make it easier for sharing, I’ve created this rich, creamy, easy-to-make Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix! I’ve been making it for friends and coworkers for a few years now, so I’m making it official and sharing it with all y’all for this holiday season!
This homemade hot chocolate mix makes a great gift for the holidays. You can easily make multiple batches and portion it into cute packages for friends, coworkers, teammates, or family. One of my favorite ways to pack it up is in clear pastry bags, with marshmallows, chocolate chips, peppermints, or your other favorite hot chocolate additions. It makes this adorable little hot chocolate cone that fit perfectly into gift boxes or bags.
This recipe isn’t quite the same as my Homemade Hot Chocolate. This mix is meant to be made and kept in bulk for sharing and enjoying all winter long. My Homemade Hot Chocolate recipe only makes two servings. This mix makes a whopping one quart of dry mix, so basically, endless hot chocolate!
How to make homemade hot chocolate mix
To make this, you only need a few ingredients!
- Cocoa powder (or cacao powder for a darker chocolate)
- Dry milk powder
- Powdered sugar
- A pinch of salt
I prefer cacao powder, since it’s a little more natural and not as processed. Dry milk powder helps creates a super creamy hot chocolate when it’s mixed. If you want to make this extra rich and creamy, add in some of your favorite powdered coffee creamer, or replace all the dry milk powder with it. You can use regular powdered sugar or your preferred sugar substitute (maybe a stevia). I just don’t recommend using regular white sugar! It won’t mix as well, in the mix or when you make your drink. And of course, a pinch of salt always makes the chocolate flavor more intense.
All you do is measure each ingredient, add them to a mixing bowl or jar, and mix it together. Then just portion and package it as needed, and voila! If you’re planning to keep it for yourself, just keep it in an airtight container or jar in your pantry. My measurements below yield about 1 quart of hot chocolate mix.
To make yourself a cup of hot chocolate, measure one heaping tablespoon of mix into your mug. Pour in 8-10 ounces of warm milk and stir until combined. Add any of your preferred hot chocolate flavors or mix-ins, and top with whipped cream or marshmallows.
Whether you share with friends or enjoy it for yourself, my homemade hot chocolate mix will keep you warm and happy all winter long.
