Best Ever Burger Sauce
Grilling season is upon us, and grilling season means burgers. Every burger (or burger bowl, in my case lately) needs a good sauce to go with it. This is my favorite Burger Sauce recipe that I’ve been making the last few years. It’s creamy, tangy, a little sweet, and a delicious balance to the richness of a thick, juicy burger.
With the weather warming up and spring around the corner, we’re itching to start using our grill more and more often. And of course, that means making lots of burgers. I won’t lie, burgers are one of my favorite foods.
If you ask me, a burger isn’t a burger without all the toppings and fixings. Ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise are classics. Then there’s pickles and onions (for some people, I’ve never loved onions on burgers). This sauce basically takes all the classic condiments and toppings, and mixes them all together. Except cheese. That would be weird in this sauce.
And a bonus? This sauce doubles as a delicious dressing for a burger bowl. Husband and I have been loving burger bowls recently as a good low-carb option. Plus they’re great to meal prep.
Honestly, this sauce would be great for fries, too. Or even chicken tenders. But I’m digressing.
How to Make the Best Ever Burger Sauce
To make it, you will need:
- Ketchup
- Mayonnaise
- Greek yogurt (or sour cream)
- Mustard
- Pickles (or pickle juice)
- Caramelized onions
- A touch of honey
- Garlic powder
- Paprika
- Salt
- Pepper
Now, making Burger Sauce couldn’t be easier!
First, make the caramelized onions. Dice a medium yellow onion and add it to a heavy bottom pot or skillet with a drizzle of avocado oil (or butter). Cook the onions over medium-low heat, stirring consistently, until they reach a deep caramel brown color. This will take about 20-25 minutes. Be careful not to let them burn! You can deglaze the pot with water, bone broth, or even a splash of wine or bourbon if you want.
While those are caramelizing, gather the rest of the ingredients. Dice the pickles if you’re using them. Once the onions are done, transfer them to a smaller bowl and let them cool for a few minutes.
Next, add all the ingredients to a mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly. Taste for seasoning and adjust as needed. Either add more spices, or balance with more mayo or ketchup. Add a touch of honey for a little sweetness if you’d like.
Now, transfer the burger sauce to a jar with a lid, or cover the mixing bowl with a lid or plastic wrap. Let the sauce refrigerate until you’re ready to eat. It gets better the longer it chills and the flavors blend together.
